Redfern Legal Centre (RLC) has released a new report that reveals over a thousand children (aged 10-17 years) have been strip searched by NSW Police within a seven year period from June 2016 to July 2023. The report written by RLC solicitors, Samantha Lee and Josh Raj -‘The Need for Reform: Strip Searches of Children by NSW Police’ collates data about the number of children strip searched by NSW Police. The data was obtained from NSW Police via access to information law.

Police in New South Wales are using force against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at a vastly disproportionate rate compared to non-Indigenous people.

Tomorrow (25 May), the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) will examine the use of force by NSW Police, along with systemic issues related to the arrest and detention of children.

Latest NSW Police strip-search figures show that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of people were still being subjected to strip searches, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and children disproportionately targeted.

Community Legal Centres NSW (CLCNSW) and Redfern Legal Centre have welcomed key amendments to the State Debt Recovery Bill 2017 which passed the NSW Legislative Council on last night (14 November 2018).

Today is International Human Rights Day and the anniversary of Paul Keating's historic Redfern Address. Keating saw Redfern as an appropriate place to contemplate our human rights record as a nation.
